unless you want (and can afford) the cinema display, i wouldn't get an apple display. yes they look nice, but i got a mitsubishi diamond view 17in (1795DT) which does almost the same resolutions as the apple but i found for almost half the price. anyway, decide what size screen you want, what resolutions you want, then just look at lots and lots till you find one you like, price variation between shops is huge so look hard.

I agree with Paulos regarding the Cinema Display. Whatever you get don't sacrifice and buy a cheapo monitor....it's the one thing that you interact with the most....unless you're a lightning typist!
Get a monitor with a trinitron tube for sure, they're much nicer to look at. I'm using an old Apple 17" multi scan that I bought off of ebay for $100, had to get a $9 adapter to connect the apple style monitor cable to the pc style video card.
If you like the style of the Apple displays I think you can pick them up much more reasonable now...the prices just dropped I think. I didn't get one because of the ugly feet they put under them....it wouldn't fit under my roll top desk anyway and I couldn't get anyone to tell me that I could remove them....oh well I'm rambling now. Get a trinitron!

The Mitsubishi 19-inch is a really nice monitor for less than $500. Perfectly flat screen. Doesn't take up a lot of space, at least compared to a 21.
When buying a monitor for yourself, not a business, it's best to go looking at them and see exactly what each one looks like to you. You have to bear in mind that it will look different at home than it does in the store, but it will give you a chance to compare the monitors.

I would suggest the Sony Trintiron FD series. You can get 15", 17", 19" and 21". They have totally flat CRTs, and are, in my experience, much better than comparable Mitsubishi DiamondPro screens. I would reccomend the Multiscan G400 of F400 - a 19".
