Hi-

Does anyone out there have any idea where I might go to find a cable or DSL modem for the Mac? I'm interested in finding prices and availability... If what I'm finding with Google is any indication, Mac users just don't connect via DSL or cable!

Plenty of Mac users are on cable and DSL. The modems are usually supplied by the cable/DSL company for free. That's how I got mine.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. No offence to you though.
I have had DSL on 3 Mac for the past 2.5 years.
Your ISP will supply one to you.

You just connect to the modem through a standard ethernet. You don't need to find a "Mac specific" model, if that's your question. But as mentioned above, most providers will lend or rent you the modem.

Those guys are right, your provider should supply you with one.

A thought on cable vs. DSL -- I've had both over the past three years and have found cable to be far superior. I've had Earthlink and Qwest DSL. In both cases it sucked rocks. For cable I've had RoadRunner and RCN (in New York City). In both cases I LOVED it. Some people believe that cable will slow down if there are too many users connected in your neighborhood. My experience in Manhattan proved this to be incorrect.

If you go DSL and you need a router I'll sell you my Cisco 675. Leave me a post here or e-mail if interested. Personally, I'd go cable though.

No need to buy the modem. It's built into the cost of your monthly fee.

Although I have to disagree with ridge_hippie. I've had DSL for two years through EarthLink and have had a great experience. My cable modem experience with AT&T has been blocked with the use of psychosomatic drugs.

Seriously, check out the providers in your area. If you have the option of both, evaluate them. Talk to the people who use the services and get their opinion before picking one. I know you can get some detailed information on DSL at DSL Reports. I'm not sure if there's an equivalent site for cable....

Our provider, Taconic Telephone, was happy to supply a modem, but they wanted to give me a USB one. I was able to talk them into Ethernet, which is a much better deal for OS X--no drivers required. It feeds into a Linksys router which shares the DSL between our two Macs, no problem. Opening up the ports for SSH and Apache was a bit of a pain.

I know that Qwest (the only provider I know of here in Helena, MT) provides modems to its subscribers. The problem is that if I have a Mac, I have to pay $300 for a Cisco. No other choice. I don't have that kind of dough. I am convinced that I can find one for cheaper somewhere else, so I've been looking. Only thing is, my looking has provided me with no DSL or cable modems thus far.

I can see that everyone who posted here apparently either purchased their modem from their provider, or it was given. Which answers the question of where to find them: nowhere but the provider.

Or other surfers... Ridge_hippie, I'd like to know what you want for your Cisco.

Thanks to all of you!
Matt

Oh, and unfortunately, AT&T doesn't provide Cable internet services out here, yet. This is what I trade for the scenery.
