all my mp3's are on a nfs export off my linux box, mounted by my cube. Works fine in iTunes.

So I get an iPod today, and I'm all excited to get it synched, but it won't. All songs that are on my nfs share are unable to be downloaded to the iPod, either automatically or manually. It craps out with "Attempting to copy to the disk 'Helium' failed: because an unknown error occurred (-39).

any ideas?

oh, and it works fine using a local mp3 file, or off an appleshare mp3.

I think it is not a NFS problem per-se but more a UFS problem. Since I assume your NFS server has a UFS file system. This could be the problem. I also have the same problem so I had to copy all my mp3 files locally on my hard disk (HFS+) in order for iPod to sync. Hopefully Apple will fix this in an update soon. It is a bit shameful that this is a problem since I would assume that itunes to iPod connectivity would be independent of the underlying FS ...

For now you are pretty much stuck with syncing from a local hard drive.

after doing some more searching this morning, i found the fix on the macintouch report on the iPod.

use SetFile (from the developer tools) to set the type to "MPG3" and creator to "hook".

And then it works.

I'm a very happy camper now.
