Hi all,

I just installed OS 10.1. Before I installed, I backup the whole drive to my FW HD. Clean the drive and got OSX, everything works. On my second restart, after itunes 2.02 and Security update, the FW HD doesn't show up, not in OSX nor OS9 volume.

Went to Apple profile in OS9, the mac do see there is a FW device, but now it called 'fw609e,10483 - sbp609e, 104d8', not 'OWC Mercury Elite'.

What happen???

Is it my FWHD toasted?? My everything is in there...
I always keep two copys of data, one in internal drive, one in FWHD...until this upgrading...

Inside my FWHD, is IBM 60gb Deskstar 60GXP.

Any help???

Should I open the FWHD case?? What should I do??

John

Did you install 10.1 or 10.1.1?

Apple put out an update that fixes firewire issues in 10.1, but it's not easily accessable on their web site. Most people run the software update and it appears there.

Hope this helps, but if you updated to 10.1.1, I don't have any clues, sorry.

What you should try doing (I have had problems with FW drives) is trying to hotplug the drive, which basically involves plugging the drive in after the computer and drive are both fully booted up instead of leaving the drive plugged in while the computer starts up. Also try the other port, and make sure the drive is not making odd screeching of scratching noises when you turn it on. It should only make the normal clicks that (I hope) you can remember at least a little from turning it on in the past. If there are odd noises, you may need to send it to a hard drive repair place, but if it sounds fine, you may want to take it out of the FW bridge if you're desparate and see if it will plug into the ATA on your computer (assuming you have an empty one, or have one at all). This would definitely void your warranty, unless it has already expired. Try the hotplugging, listen for the clicks, and tell us what happens.

PS I hope I don't have to tell you to make sure its not plugged into a FW hub

Only the FW bridge is toasted.

The HD in another FW case, works fine.

I am so glad I got all my data back, even I just spend $$$
