I'm in the market for 2 FireWire ext HD's,both to be used to store music (MP3 and AIFF) and still photos from my digital camera.

1) 20-60 GB to connect to my TiBook
2)20-60 GB to connect to SO's Graphite G3

both computers running 9.2 now, will be moving over to X within a few months.
Anyone have strong likes/dislikes based on experience with the various drives out there?
Drives do not need portability, just looking for best price combined with least hassle.
thanks
Caroline

I've got an 60gb "Mercury Pro" from OWC connected part-time to my Wallstreet. OWC have been very pleasant to deal w/, & I've had no problems w/ the drive at all, save one: the Finder-freeze-during-copy bug in the 1394 bridge chip. This should not affect a new drive. I like it fine, but I kinda wish I'd carved it up into partitions when it was new (know how long it takes to defrag 60 gig when it's 90% full?).

For likes & dislikes generally, I have to say I'll never knowingly use a Seagate, ever again. Ever.

I've had a bunch o' Quantums (SCSI), had great luck w/ all, but I believe they got swallowed by someone. Western DIgital has had an excellent rep for years. Maxtor, OTOH, I know only that they're pretty common on the PC side.

No experience likewise w/ Toshiba & Fujitsu 3.5" drives. Don't think Connor is still around.

On a side note: there's a growing volume of data suggesting that 9.2 is prone to producing severe HD corruption when run outside of Classic. It happened to me, and I will no longer have 9.2 on my computer, after losing my main partition (with all mail & all prefs) to un-repairable damage to the extents file.

You might do well to revert to 9.1. There's a report thread @ MacInTouch on the 9.2 question.

I hate to disagree, but I've had pretty good luck with Seagate, terrible luck with Western Digital, and I think IBM is the best. Quantum is somewhere between Seagae and WesternDigital.

I almost forgot, make sure the firewire enclosure has the oxford 911 bridge chip set - it's a lot faster.

I've had great luck with the new LaCie drives. Oxford 911 chip so they're plenty fast.
