I'm usually sypathetic with Apple Insider, but this rumour doesn't make sense.
Wireless Optical USB Mouse?
Impossible. Where will it get the power?
OR (this would be really silly), will they come with batteries?? ;-)

It's not all that silly. I have a wireless
ADB mouse. The transcever would probably plug
into the USB, the mouse would use a battery.
I think wireless AND optical would be
extremely cool, but ONLY IF IT HAS THREE OR
MORE BUTTONS!!
Why, oh why is Apple still holding onto the
one-button legacy?
As cool as a wireless optical mouse sounds
I will not buy it (willingly) without an
ergonomic shape and three buttons.
A perfect example is the Logitech Wingman.
Excellent mouse. Feels great and it's
unmatched for fast-paced gaming.
You really need three or more buttons for
Quake or Unreal-type games.
I'm kind of glad that the puck mouse is so
awkward. Makes it easier to justify buying
a better, 3-button mouse.

I wonder if Apple will sell the mouse separately or only with a complete system purchase.

I had a wireless ADB mouse as well... the mouse itself used a single AAA battery. It lasts quite a while, I didn't have to replace it for the six months I owned the mouse.
After six months, I realized why you want a wire on a mouse... in a fit of frustration over Mac OS 8.0 crashing constantly, I took the little bugger and threw it against the wall. Suffice to say, it didn't work after I put the pieces back together...

I would love to see an optical (as in Intellimouse) Apple mouse. That's the only change I would make to the current Apple mouse. Everything else about the current one is excellent. Long live the puck.

Ok first the mouse and now a keyboard....thinking....wireless...ok ok ok....if Apple really goes further with the whole wireless concept I can only imagine a newer port further down the line...superceeding firewire or using it wirelessly. Soon a parade of peripherals all wireless CD burners, scanners, external drives, printers, and maybey even the sound in sound out jacks may become wireless (with adapters on the other end of course for the not so wirelss recievers, speakers etc.) Soon the only wire visible on your Mac will be the electric power plug. Am I guessing in the wrong direction here? Or are we in for something big at MWNY concerning wireless?

I've got an idea...instead of Apple using time and money to make wireless mice and keyboards...let's finish up MacOS X!

I can just see it now. Let's say your kid sees your brand new wireless mouse sitting on the desk, and it's calling him. Now the mouse has become a spaceship and is hiding in its secret cave under the couch cushions. Maybe Apple should put a beeping locator on it while they're at it.
