Hey all. I've been wondering lately what the best sound setup is for a gamer. I know the SoundBlaster from Creative is a great card, but according to reports from places like here I don't believe it will actually improve my game's performance. If anything, the game will sound better with a small FPS hit in performance for most cases.

Then I think about the USB Soundsticks that Apple always advertises, and I read somewhere that those things can use up to 30% of the CPU to do their sound. 30%!?!. There's no way I'm going to use those no matter how good they sound.

I'm basically looking for a good way to take the sound load off the CPU and give my system good sound or better sound than it had before. Is there any way to do this? Am I stuck using headphones or should I simply settle for the SoundBlaster and accept the fact that no hardware add-on will improve performance and improve sound?

Help!

By the way, I would be especially indebted to anyone who currently owns USB speakers and a copy of Quake III Arena or Unreal Tournament and was willing to do a few FPS tests for me...

The games have to be specially written to take advantage of them, I think; so right now, you won't see much difference, if any - and even if they were optimised for it, its not a great difference.

Just use the built in sound output...
