I'm trying to decide between the LaCie/APS 12x4x32 and the new 8x8x32 drives on the market (all scsi external).

I'll mostly use it for incremental backups (i.e. RW mode) so maybe 8x RW would be better, however, I haven't seen ANY 8x RW discs yet.

What opinions do y'all have about these drives?

Also, will I need to upgrade my mac standard SCSI (I have a beige 266 MT w/ built in scsi w/ a scanner and internal ZIP on the chain right now)?

Thanks for your help.

Robert

Robert...

Make sure the burner you want to buy is supported by the burning software you intend to use.
If you plan on using Toast, check the Adaptec website for the burners it supports.
I wanted to use their DirectCD for CDRW's, but it does not support my Yamaha 8424.

If you would like the entire email I received from Adaptec, regarding burning CDRW's with their products, give me your email address in a posting here.

well, if youre gonna back up most of the time, i would go for the 8x8x32. keep in mind that you can always lower the speed to 4x until youc an get some 8x cd-rws. if you get a 4x rw burner, youll be stuck at 4x. what brand is this 8x8x32? then i can give you my opinions. as for the scsi, you wont have to upgrade it. my friend has a lacie 8x4xsomething running off the built-in scsi in her beige g3/dt. and i have a 6x4x24 running on my quadra...

however, it might be easier to get a dvd-ram drive for your purposes. with a cd-rw, you have to go through the effort of burning a cd every time you need to back up. with a dvd-ram, you can just drag and drop, like a big ol hard drive. the cartridges are something like $40, but they are rewritable, and they hold about 5 gigs each.

check the following webpage: Using DVD-RAM http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n60235

and by the way, the built-in zip isnt scsi, its ide. so you have 1 device on your scsi chain, the scanner.
