Hi all,

My B&W G3 (400,256MB,Rev1,. 9.0.4) is starting to annoy me...It's got this terrible issue where it refuses to "re-initiate" any USB devices when waking from sleep. I've attempted to use the devices without the Hub and have used just the basic mouse and KB but they do the same.....By unplugging each USB device and plugging it in again (thereby loading the driver again) all is fine, but it's becoming a real pain.....

Not sure if it's concidental but my 21" Studio Display no longer calibrates (it displays an error half way through). I've re0installed the OS after low level formats, run Norton - Everything but I still have the same probs. I also had terrible freezes when I was using my USB Midi interface which forced me to give up with it frankly. I know that some early G3's had unreliable USB hardware - Any ideas on this one or has anyone had the same experience?

Thanks

Matt

I'm also having the same problems. However mine is with an Epson printer and a Macsense Keyboard. I have had the keyboard replaced. It has fixed some of the problems, not all. My G3/400 is a rev 1. So I guess I can expect some problems.
That's all. Just to let you we're out there.

Have same problems - solutions are don't use hubs and don't let computer go to sleep - agree its a pain in the neck

Have you played with disabling some of the USB drivers? I had some issues with a PowerBook G3 and a MacAlly USB mouse, until I disabled the MacAlly USB drivers. The mouse still works under the OS-installed USB extensions (although I have lost the use of the second mouse button), and no more problems.

I suspect USB driver conflicts are more common than anyone realizes. Try resolving the drivers before throwing away any USB hardware.

Thanks for all the help - Mac users never fail to make me proud of being part of this community....Anyway, to reply to some of you:

1. I have messed around with USB drivers but to no avail. I have had USB problems with this machine from day one. I am convinced that it's an issue with the USB HW in the Mac. Apple see it differently (of course!).

2. Unfortunately I can hardly NOT use a Hub - I have a number of USB devices (although only 2 which need to be connected full time excluding the mouse / KB. There is a hub in the 21" Studio Display but this doesn't provide ample power (USB like to be able to take up to 500ma per port I believe) so that rules out using those ports.

I'm on the brink of getting the machine checked out by an independant tech and if it IS found to be the USB HW in the Mac at fault, I will be speaking to the Citizen's Advice Beureau her in the UK as it doesn't perform the way it should. WHether I'll get any joy from that route is another story altogether....!

My USB peripherals consist of a UMAX Astra 2200, MicroConnectors USB KB, MS Intellimouse Explorer Mouse, DrayTek ISDN Vigor 128 TA and Entrega 4 port hub. Even when stripped back to the original Mouse and KB the thing still has "issues"......

Thanks again

Matt (Macnerd)

I bought mij g3 300 in april 1999 (here in the netherlands) (must be a rev .1 i guess)
but, having no trouble at all!!! maybe it has something to do with the factories being for europe here in ireland!!! maybe theyre using other sources, for example, i think USB hardware is made by philips, and they have, just like IBM several factories in america, and europe (philips in netherlands big ic factorie, and ibm hard disks in bulgaria

i don't know where they are produced in america!!!

I have a B&W G3/300 running Mac OS 8.6 with a UMAX 2100U scaner, a EPSON 740 printer, a XLR8 ice view 4 ports, a Gravis GamePad Pro USB + mouse & keyboard with sleep enabled and No Problem at all!!!
My G3 is a rev 1 made in the US.
The only thing i could think of is: make sure your keyboard is plugged in your USB port 1!!!
Good Luck.

Thanks. Actually mine wasn't - I did a swap around (running the hub from Port 1 on the Monitor) and will see if it helps.....What's the reasoning on Port 1 needing the KB to be plugged in? Is the USB HW preset to look there for the KB at startup or something?

I really don't know why but, it is the golden rule of USB debugging!
Hope it works for you.
