Anyone interested in a 10 day old perfect 5gb (1.8 in) hd from my iPod? I'm selling it because I need the money for the 10 GB one that's out - I want to try to put it in my iPod. How much would you pay? $150? $200? more? retail is $399 or $499. If there is much demand, I can make a ebay auction.

Please email if interested.

Umm, are you a little crazy?

I recall that the 5GB drive in the iPod is the largest available. It's not a standard size, and a 10GB laptop drive would not fit inside the iPod. If you know something I don't, please tell me.

Maybe this guy is not so crazy after all. The drive in the iPod is the Toshiba MK5002MAL (which by the way costs $399 - so maybe the iPod is not overpriced by Apple).

Anyhow, I did a search on Google and came across a Polish Computerworld page saying something about MK0102GAH. Well my polish is not as good as it should be but this article talks about 5GB and 10GB 1.8 inch drives. I checked the US Computerworld site and nothing turned up there. Google also turns up only this Polish page when searching for MK0102GAH.

More searching turned up this page at Toshiba. The Polski's had the Model No. wrong, it is MK1002GAH (not 0102).
Now it is only to see the price tag - this may be a good option for people that think they didn't spend enough when they bought the iPod

Notice the different form factors:

5GB MK5002MAL: 5.0(Hight) x 54.0(Wight) x 78.5(Depth)
10GB MK1002GAH: 8.0(Hight) x 54.0(Wight) x 78.5(Depth)

I don't think it is going to fit is this is the drive he was referring to.

Make sure your electrical requirements for both drives are TOTALLY identical. You could end up frying the entire iPod if the drives aren't matched.

Careful Karl -

The 'Pod doesn't have any "extra" space. That added 3mm for the 10mm drive could be a problem. It's really tight in there and any space you might make would most likely reduce the shock-absorbency(?) of the Pod. Also previously mentioned, the 10mm may be more power hungry = shorter battery life.

I've decided(rationalized?) that 5GB is an optimal size for this type of device. Plenty of room for a day or two of tunes with only a 10-15 min break to completely change out the playlist. Any larger drive and this upload time grows too. iTunes needs to make it easier to make playlists. Maybe a window, type in the size you want and let iTunes pick from your library...

With the money you'd spend on that drive, why don't you just buy another iPod and you'll have your 10 gb (plus those headphones that you lost by sticking them through the wash)..

I've found that at the 160 kbps I'm encoding the tunes I've got enough music for nearly three days of continuous playback. I've still got about
300 megs left too. The pod is equal to the task too. I'll turn it on
and start playing when I leave for work. I'll listen to it while waiting
for the bus, then listen to it all the way downtown on the bus and listen
while walking to work. Then I'll go to my desk and plug it into my little
powered speakers at my desk and listen until it's time for lunch where I
will connect my Sony earbuds and walk to meet my friend at lunch and listen
on the way. Then during lunch I'll just leave it playing, when done I'll
walk back to the office with it still playing. On the way to the bus I'll
listen to it, then on the way back home still listening and when I finally
get to the car I'll just let it go some more. I finally shut it down when
I get home. If you don't have the backlight on, it will go for 11-12 hours surprisingly. I had my backlight set to 3 seconds and it reduced
my playback time by about an hour or so, down to 9-10 hrs but it still
kept on going. An amazing device.

If you encode at 128 kbps instead of 160 you can get around 1300 songs
according to Apple. Might be worth investigating although I like the
sound at 160.

I'll see what I can do to get it in, maybe remove the pads and put a thiner thing in. At any rate, to make this feasible, I need to open it, i've followed some instructions, but cant get it, anyone have any luck opening it with easy instructions?

BTW - going back to the topic, will anyone buy this for $150-$200? I need it so I can save for the 10 GB one (which im getting at discount)

Why don't you just put it on eBay. If it retails for $399, you should be able to get at least $300.

If you want to open your iPod follow the instructions here.
I did it and I had the thing open in few minutes.

I used my fingernails and it hurt a little, but it did the job without leaving a scratch on the iPod.

But that's good, right? The only one available. Supply and demand. I regularly see items selling on eBay for = or > than their retail value.

or maybe i don't feel like giving out my info just to post on a computer message board?

if the kid wants to **** up the new toy that's fine. i'm just saying he read the warranty (you did read the warranty, right?) so you know if you open it up, the warranty's gone. $399 is too much for me to tinker with. i'm happy with my ipod the way it is. and yes, if you toy around with taking parts out of the thing, don't be surprised when you **** it up.

Are you not forgetting something here!? If you sell your original drive to fund the new one.. What if you find the new just does not fit? You are left with a small pile of useless bits. Not to mention you will have wasted a lot of money..

Wakey wakey..
