A friend of mine recently told me that ear buds are more harmful than your standard headphones due to the closeness of the output to your drum. Now, I'm aware that anything turned up pretty loud is going to be bad for your hearing, but I value my hearing, and I don't want to sacrafice it to listen to my iPod. Anyone have any thoughts or information on this?

Thanks
Aaron

The info your friend gave you is pretty sound (ha... ha...). The ones that go over your ears (not studio headphones, but you know what I mean) are better for your ears, but hey...

Whenever I'm not within range of a stereo system I have my discman and Sony earbuds in (they're better on the move than the other ones) and quite loud, and my hearing is fine... so I hear.

What is dangerous is prolonged exposure to extreme volume.

I worked at a hearing aid manufacturer in the mid to late 1980s.

An audiologist told me the guys he found had lost the most hearing
were artillery gunners from world war II and polka band drummers
since drums tend to be short, but loud transient audio info. Ditto
for firing artillery guns and cannons.

That being said, re: buds:
I don't think it's any more dangerous than any other type of headphone.

The concern would be: would you have better hearing if you listened to
your iPod at a moderate volume level for six months or spent six months
on tour with Metallica? It's all relative.

When I was gigging frequently I wore earplugs and it really helped.

But I never crank the headphones up to the point where my ears ring.

If I go to concerts, I also have a pair of earplugs handy just in case.
