I've just bought a SmartMedia & CompactFlash dual-slot card reader, installed the software, made sure all necessary USB extensions are enabled, and after hours of frustration, I am still getting the "This disk is unrecognisable. Eject? Initialise?" dialog come up.

The disk is empty but don't want to risk initialising it. Would doing so make it unreadable in the camera (Kodak DC290) and what else should I try to resolve this problem?

Thanks

I had this exact problem with a compactflash reader that came with my Epson camera. The source of my problem was that I didn't have the File Exchange control panel enabled. Once I enabled it, everything worked fine. I went through a couple different brands of card readers before figuring it out.

Would you believe it! I pinpointed the problem I was having down to the fact that the SmartMedia card was being inserted too quickly! Insert it slowly, and it shows up on the desktop A-OK, titled 'untitled' with a default hard disk icon.

I suggest to others who may be having similar problems to insert the card slowly.

N.B. I think this problem is specific to the Smart Media card owing to its design, where a metal contact must connect with the gold plate, whereas a CompactFlash card actually plugs in snugly.
