I've upgraded my Intel MacMini's internal drive to a 7200rpm model and want to make use of the original SATA 60GB HD.
I have found very cheap USB 2.0 enclosures for 2.5" SATA HD's but none with Firewire.
Has anyone ever come across one of these? Also I live in the UK so if anyone has ever spotted one this side of the pond it would be good to know.
P.S Can you boot an Intel Mac from an external USB drive?

I haven't seen ANY firewire 2.5" drive enclosures of any kind or brand, but I HAVE seen combination USB/firewire enclosures. See if you can find combination enclosures-they may be listed as "USB" first or only, but if you read the whole blurb you may find some that have firewire too.
I have yet to find a definitive answer (mainly because I haven't looked hard) for your PS. Someone will doubtless chime in soon on that.

Thnx for a speedy reply. I can find 2.5" pocket caddies with firewire and usb, but they do NOT accept SATA drives, just IDE which is the prob I'm having.
P.S Any "Gen" on MacIntel USB drive bootability?

SATA<->USB chipsets are very cheap. ATA<->USB/FW chipsets are somewhat cheap. SATA<->FW chipsets are very expensive. This is both a result of and a cause of the availability of enclosure with the aforementioned combinations of ports.
I think I found a 2.5" SATA to FW enclosure for a previous poster; search the forums or start googling for it.
Yes, all Intel Macs can boot from USB.

OWC Mercury On-The-Go Portable 2.5" FW800/US... (MSTG800U2) at OWC
Although expensive, I can vouch for the quality of the Mercury on the Go enclosures and for OWC. I have the firewire 400 Oxford 911 version for ATA drives and have been very satisfied with it. As far as I have seen, there arent much cheaper options for what you want. FWIW, it comes with a nice leather case.

I'd second the OWC enclosures (I've used several of them including the one you linked). Yes, they do cost more than some other brands, but it's worth the peace of mind for me to know exactly what chipset they use. A lot of other manufacturers don't make that information very easy to find.

If I was going to get a firewire enclosure I probably would get an OWC one, but considering I'd pay a hefty amount on import tax getting it shipped to the UK, I think I'll stick with a USB enclosure with SATA, I think Firewire 800's overkill for a Laptop HD anyhow.
