I have an old G4 tower that I'd like to turn into a machine to serve a DIY photo frame. I'd like it cheap and bright. I'm figuring that this could be possible since I got 15" NEC LCDs a year ago for $50 each. It wouldn't have to have a stand or housing, as I'd frame it. I'm thinking no bigger than 10" diameter. Ideas?

Two things: a small display is going to have a high pixel density and won't be produced in much volume, which will both drive the cost up.
17" LCDs are actually cheaper than 15", mostly because of volume. Is there a reason you want the photo frame smaller?

Good points. I'm looking for a 10" or less so it will blend in more...like a regular 5x7 or slightly bigger. I was thinking that perhaps there's a good display meant for installation in cars (non-touchscreen) would be produced for this need. Further, if I could get just a standard photo frame normally used with RAM that had a VGA or DVI input, that would work. It should be easier to do this than provide the functionality to use cards, etc.

You can actually buy these things. I saw one at Zeller's for about $99 CDN. It didn't run off a computer though, it took the pictures from a memory card.
It would probably cost you the same to make it. You need to find a good cheap parts store like this one Displays for G3 Pismo - iFixit although I'm not sure that one is cheap.

I know that you can buy photo frames, but I'd really like one that I could use from a computer to provide more flexibility. Perhaps flikr streaming or slick transistions like OS X's photo screensaver.

Bump. It seems like there's got to be some photo frame that you can use with a VGA or DVI input, and it would sure be nice to be able to use OS X's advanced tools to display those pictures. Ideas?
