I have a Rev. A Beige G3 with an internal Zip drive. I want to add an internal hard drive to the expansion bay left of the floppy (above the Zip), but I don't know what type of hard drive I should get.

The manual says that the G3s that came with an internal Zip has an SCSI connector that can be used to connect new devices in that empty bay, but I thought the G3s had IDE or ATA interfaces for hard drives...

And what's the difference between IDE, EIDE, and ATA? Anyway, I would appreciate any help.

I second 533's suggestion for picking HDs for the G3. Mike's site is the best for this kind of info.

Also, buried somewhere in the XLR8yourmac FAQ's you'll find a note that Apple's Drive Setup may not properly format "large" third party IDE drives for Beige G3's. There's a TIL somewhere on Apple's site that specifically recommends using a third party disk formatting utility for non-Apple approved IDE drives.

From experience, I can say that even the version of Drive Setup included with OS 9.1 did not work properly with either a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40 GB or an IBM DeskStar 45 GB in my rev A beige G3.

The symptoms were it wouldn't warm restart and sometimes wouldn't cold boot. Eventually the Maxtor's driver got corrupted and even Norton couldn't correct it. I reformatted the IBM drive using Intech's HD SpeedTools and it has worked fine ever since. I haven't tried it on the Maxtor yet.

Mine may be a particularly bad experience, as I've seen posts from a number of people with G3's who haven't had this problem. Just the same, if you replace your IDE disk I would recommend going with HD SpeedTools to be safe.
