I have a 17" iMac with integrated graphics. I added two Gigs of RAM. I ordered this monitor. It has shipped.

Newegg.com - Hanns·G HW-173DBB Black 17" 8ms DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 250 cd/m2 500:1 - Retail

Would it be worth it to get the DVI dongle and cable? I already have the VGA dongle and the cable for VGA is included. Would DVI increase the image quality? I know nothing of DVI.

Would it increase it enough to justify the cost. I am poor. And if I went with DVI what would I need?

thanks

In my opinion, YES.

The video signal your Mac produces is purely digital, but then it must be converted to an analog signal and then back again to a digital signal by the LCD with a VGA connection. DVI passes on the more pure, original digital signal to your display which makes for a crisper, more authentic image.

On my 20" LCD I see fine lines and patterns (like dotted grid lines in Photoshop) "dance" because of the VGA signal form my eMac. Unfortunately, the eMac cannot produce a DVI signal without some serious hacking, so I must live with it until I am able to afford a MacBook.

Also DVI is "smarter" and will usually sync up with your display to the best of its capabilities, which means there's no need to stretch, move or degauss the image as with a VGA signal. That is, it's usually more "plug and play" with little to no adjusting or fiddling needed.

This monitor already has a DVI input, and your laptop already has a DVI output. All you need is a DVI cable, no adapters necessary.

It depends on what you are doing with your computer. If you are doing graphic design and it is imperative that you judge color homogeneity, you definitely need DVI.
The easiest way to notice the noise in VGA connections is to look at your LCD sideways or from above. As color changes hues due to the nature of LCD, noise gets very emphasized. If you can notice this noise and you want it gone, get DVI.
But do you really need it?

On my DELL Ultrasharp 2407FPW, I do notice the differences between VGA and DVI inputs in full 1920x1200 pixels. I wish it has 2 DVi inputs without spending big bucks for a Gefen switcher.
