I've got a Maxtor 20 GB Diamondmax Plux hd that I installed into a Pyro Firewire Hard drive enclosure. The set up has worked flawlessly for several weeks. However, recently I've been getting a sporatic message that "A firewire disk has stopped responding. Reconnect the disk ..." At this point the computer is frozen and has to be hard reset. This only seems to happen when the FW hard drive is connected to my rev 1. BW G3 running OS 9.1 with 192 MB RAM. This does not occur when connected to my Firewire Powerbook (Pismo) also running OS 9.1. The Firewire HD is using drivers from hard disk speek tools 3.2. Thinking that the connection to the HD was lost upon sleep, I tried turning sleep off but had no luck. I updated the drivers too but that had no effect.
Any idea why I keep losing the connection to my FW hd?

Unfortunately I can't offer a solution, but I can confirm that I have the same problem with my Pismo and LaCie Pocket 12GB FW drive. I'm using Mac OS 9.1 with all available updates through the Software Update and LaCie FW drivers. I also think that this problem appeared only recently, possibly after some system software update but I'm not sure. Any ideas anyone?

JMT-
Interestingly, I'm not seeing the issue on my Pismo (OS 9.1 and all the latest software from system update except the carbon lib and open transport updates). The pismo seems to have no problems with the firewire drive. I'm only seeing the issue with the BW G3.
Please post if you determine what is the cause or if you remember what you've installed recently.

indigo, my problems were solved after a re-install of OS 9.1 last weekend. The trick that worked for me was to turn off LaCie's extensions in the Extensions Manager and just use OS 9.1's own drivers. It's been three days know without losing connection to the external FW HD. Hope this info is of some help to you.
