my Pro mouse that came with the cube is getting worn out...

The white 'board' under it have been heavily worn, causing the adjustable click tension thing and the front of the upper part of the mouse to scratch my 3M Precise Mousing Surface!
And this is not after too heavy use and i'm affraid that i will need to buy a new one every year if this goes on...
Apple's old mice just kept on working and working and working, year after year.

Am i using a totally wrong mousepad or is it apples design that is not 100%?!

I have noticed that my pro mouse has become quite loud when clicking, very squeeky but there seems to be no ware on the white oval, and I have been useing it a lot. except for a little minut crack on the bottom that hasn't spread in the past month. I am using a Belkin mouse pad that has a wrist support and it is nice. I don't know why yours is so worn.

I think your 3M mouse mat is partly at blame here. The textured surface of the precise mousing mat is designed to grip the ball of a conventional mouse properly. There is no need for this with the optical pro-mouse and all that the 3M mat is adding is extra wear to the bottom of your mouse.

In any GUI enviorment, I have seen that mice are indeed very important for the optimal utilization of that Operating System.

The only reason you would need a mousepad is if the surface of your work area cannot be read by the mouse, e.g. a glass desktop.

For regular mice I lean towards the finely textured plastic surface pads with thin neoprene underneath. For the pro optical, just a fabric surface pad will do, and reduce wear as well. Just make sure the neoprene behind the fabric is thin, I believe this keep the mouse from sinking in and therefore sluggish travel over the surface. Just my 2 cents

I have been using my Pro Mouse on my wooden desktop for months now. The white oval picks up some dirk occasionally but there is no wear yet.

i've been using my pro mouse for almost a year on a plain 'ol freeby felt mousepad. The pointer accuracy is perfect and the white oval is fine.

cafepress makes really good mousepads. they're that company that handles merchandising for all those goofy random organizations, and a few companies as well (like stimpsoft). anyway, the 'boycott RIAA' mousepad i got from them works great with my intellimouse explorer, which uses the same basic optical bits as apple's mouse.

Hmm...I've had my pro mouse since December, and can't say I've had any such trouble either. I've used it on both bare wood and on a cheapy cloth and neoprene mousepad with no trouble. I have had the occassional problem with tracking...The pointer will skip ahead really quickly for a short distance.

But absolutely no wear...I think the worst problem is trying to keep the silly thing clean! (The outer casing I mean...It fingerprints rather easily.)

i've had the best luck using white/gray index paper as a mouse surface. when the paper gets dirty, i just use a new piece. no wear on the mouse, and a lot less skipping than the desk surface...

Do other folks experience "skipping" with the Apple Pro mouse? My cursor sometimes jumps across the screen unexpectedly, and I have to bring it back to the work area. This occured more frequently when I didn't use a mouse pad (fake woodgrain particleboard desk), so I started using the smooth pad that came with my "comfort point" wrist support. I still have some skipping, but only occasionally, on a 450 Cube.

I have been having the cursor jump. I think I have identified the problem to be the graphics on my mouse pad. There are large blocks of one color with distinct lines between them. The mouse jumps at the transition from one block to the next. I think the optical logic is being confused.

Yup, I get the cursor jump, too. In my case, it usually happens when I just lift the mouse slightly to reposition it on the mouse mat. At this point the cursor flies of in the opposite direction. Will try the suggestion of using a plain(er) mouse mat!!

I have the pro mouse and the Intelimouse Explorer, I must admit I get a fair deal more "skipping" with the Explorer.. Another problem I often get is "the Jitters" when the mouse suddenly becomes hyper jittery and is totally inaccurate. I've tried cleaning the eye, and mousepad, using no mouse pad. Sometimes this works, other times it doesnt.. But then later the mouse will run fine so I dont think the mouse is actually breaking down.

Im thinking of getting those mouse skates (thin strips of non slip plastic that stick to the undercarriage of the mouse), as maybe the problem is the mouse having too much friction.. any ideas?

I've been using a Pro mouse since Aug 2000. Had minor skipping. Solved by using a plain dark blue pad. I get no visible wear using this soft felt mousepad. Works very well. I am very happy with it so far.

After using both the pro and a logitech optical, I'm reporting no problem from either. I do like the Pro's short cable for carrying around with the TiBook.

I use my Pro Mouse on a regular mousepad and there's absolutely no wear and tear. The reason I use optical is not because I can use it on any surface, but because there's NO tracking problems such as lint and such gooing up the ball on a normal mouse. If you use the Pro Mouse on a hard surface over time it WILL degrade the white cushion.
