Many years ago (back in the "beige" days) Apple sold a nifty ergonomic keyboard that was adjustable. Apple discontinued that model and hasn't offered an ergonomic keyboard since.

Given the profusion of PC ergonomic keyboards (and thus their obvious popularity), you'd think Apple would offer a nice ergonomic keyboard that matches the style of the Pro Keyboard and Pro Mouse. Aren't Mac users prone to carpal tunnel syndrome too?

I know there are some 3rd party ergonomic USB keyboards, but none of them are anywhere near as nice as the clear plastic Apple keyboard. It would be nice if Apple offered their own brand of ergo keyboard.

yeah, it is in line after the 3-button cordless optical wheel mouse !!

I will probably buy one (it will not be apple of course) to go with my new iBook when it gets here.

By the way, if you feel like taking on a new hobby and relieving your wrists a little, try switching to Dvorak. I have been learning/using it for the past month now and there is so much less strain on my wrists. I never realized how stressed they were before using the new layout.

ergo keyboard + dvorak = happy wrists!

hotani,

Where can you get a USB Dvorak keyboard? I haven't seen one at my local Mac Dealer.

I don't have one (and don't expect to find one either). I am typing dvorak on a qwerty keyboard (software switch).

If a keyboard has the same sized keys, you can switch them; but it is best to just use a cheat sheet for learning. I used keycaps...

The only ergonomic keyboards are the ones i've seen on keyboard drawers with the far point lower than the near part. If your wrist is not straight, it's not the correct position.

Beware, most ergo keyboards may help you comfort wise, but usually have junky guts. Few, if any, have keyswich actuators for the keys. Most usu a membrane system, leaving the keys musy feeling, just like every keyboard Apple has produced over the past 3 years.

I honestly think part of people's discomfort with today's keyboards is not the layout of the keys or the shape of the keybaord, but the lack of positive feedback from the keyboard when a keypress is successful. Imaging not having to floor a key to make it work, keyswitch based keyboards do not require the key to go all the way down but will actuate just before the key is at the bottom of the stroke. try a straight keyswitch keyboard and you won't believe the difference.

it's been my understanding that the AAPL ergonomic keyboard was discontiuned due to problems with system compatiblity and the seperate power / volume buttons. i definately agree though that an ergonomic keyboard would be fantastic!

I've used my Apple Ergonomic Keyboard on a couple of different systems running everything from System 7.1 to OS 8.6 with zero problems. It has to be one of the best keyboards I've ever used.
