I'm looking into getting a second display along side my 24" dell display.

I'm leaning towards the apple display but I'm curious as to what others think. Color accuracy and normal saturation levels are a must.

If you don't have a very good calibration tool, it doesn't matter what display you get. If you do, it will make the most out of whatever display you choose. Color accuracy and "normal saturation levels" are dictated by calibration and profiling, not by brand or type.

This is not to say that all displays are created equal, I just think it's wrong to talk big about color accuracy being important without having a very good calibration tool first.

Why wouldn't you just get another 24" Dell, so you would have at least a fighting chance for the gamuts to be similar?

Are you having color accuracy issues with your Dell? Have you calibrated it recently?

It is also the question how high a quality you need.

What exactly are you using it for?

And what calibration tool do you use. There has been quite a change in this in the past two years.

Color is fine, I'm looking for a second display not to replace the dell but rather use in addition too

I'm not against getting another dell but I wanted to know if there was a better choice.

I also like the cinema displays.

There are some high-end displays out there, but you need to talk to people who own one. They are very expensive, and some of them suitable for soft proofing.

price-wise: there's, for example, an 21" Eizo, but it costs the same or more than the 30" apple display.

You can take a look at this thread of the lumous landscape forum (I hope it's not forbidden to mention other forums - well, I'll know it when I feel a boot in my back).

http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/...howtopic=16781

Using the search option you will find more minitor threads. I just couldn't find them right now, and I have to leave.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I've been to the luminous-landscape a while ago, I was unaware (or oblivious) that they had a forum.

The only thing that I heard about the cinema displays is that some can cast a pink hue. I'm in the market for a 24" because the 30" is beyond my means which also puts the Eizo out of reach.

I like the Dell but their display's white is blindingly bright (I have the brightness turned down all the way) but all in all its a good display.

The 23" used to suffer from pink casts. Don't know it they still do.

If I didn't have a Gretag i1, the Apple 23" at work would be absolutely worthless. Pink as a baby's butt. I'm sure I could get it 'close' with much effort in the visual calibration app, but this thing looks horrible on power-up. When the LUT and profile load, it looks great and is easy on the eyes. I wouldn't buy one unless I could return it easily and at zero cost. The three Dell UltraSharps I own, I bought sight unseen and they've all been closer out of the box than this Apple ever dreamed of being.

You were using the Eye-One, weren't you?

Do you think Dell displays are better than Apple cinema displays? (I mean the newest generation of screens inside the same aluminum housing, upgraded about a year ago without much publicity).

To be honest, I thought they were using the same exact displays, but the more I read about it the more people seem to claim that Dell's been cutting corners. To be fair, I have not heard any reports of a pink cast on their display, and mine is holding up great.

If the gretag isn't a good calibration tool, any recommendations. I have a little mad money that I was planning on using towards a new display, I'm sure I have enough to improve my calibration tool.

That's a misunderstanding.

The Eye-One Display 2 is very good.

I got recommendations all over, and the review at drycreek recommended it.

I just bought one.

Since Gretag Macbeth has been bought by X-rite, it's now called an X-rite Eye-one Display 2. Be sure you get the display 2, the newer version.

You can still get the gretag, but I only saw it at strange sites I wouldn't want to shop at.
