I upgraded the 8 gig drive in my beige g3/300 about six months ago with a 45 gig maxtor 7200 rpm drive. I partitioned it 4 ways. A couple of days ago while it was waking from sleep, I got a yellow warning saying that there was a problem with my disk "System" which is my first partition. It added that information may have been lost.

The computer froze at this point requiring a restart. Upon restarting, I got the flashing question mark. Frustrated, I booted of the 9.1 disk to run disk first aid. Well disk first aid saw only the cd that I booted off of. Ejected the cd during startup and everything booted fine off of the Maxtor.

But the next day, the same thing happened again only with the second partition this time. I repeated the steps I had the previous day and things began to work again.

I ran Disk doctor and everything pretty much checked out (minor problems found here and there)

What could be the problem? Is the disk dying? Should I replace the drive?

You gotta tame the beast before you let it out of its cage.

I JUST had a similar problem with my Maxtor. It worked OK but would make very strange sounds when starting up from other partitions. Disk first aid always said it was fine. I has this problem for 6 months.

Finally, I called Maxtor and they immediately offered to replace the drive. They ship you a new hard drive before you have to ship the old one back so you have no real downtime. They even sent me a better drive within 4 days. Maxtor has the BEST support on the planet. Give them a call.
