I have an offer to pick up a monitor that is described as "flakey" and apparently has this problem:

"occasionally, the screen distorts but does snap back into shape. "

Anybody know what the problem is? Or what it might take to get it fixed? Is this a common problem with these monitors?

Any thoughts on the subject are appreciated - thanks.

i have a blue and white 17 studio crt and it also seems just a hair off focus and sometimes looks alittle distorted....(but it was free and isnt on my primary machine so ehh....) .i remember someone else in these forums had the same problem and had it repaired by apple and said it was a bad capacitor.....it may be worth having a shop look at it.

i had bought a 17" apple CRT studio monitor and pretty much out of the box exhibited problems like you guys are describing. i sent it back to apple under warranty and it was a bad capacitor. its been fine since it was fixed. i have no idea how much theyd charge to fix it out of warranty.

Hmmm, thanks for the notes.

After using the monitor for a little while the problem in fact seems to be this: It darkens a bit in the center of the screen, and then slowly fades to white with horizontal lines runing at a slight angle accross the screen evry 3/4 of an inch or so.

I hope it's a capacitor, as it certainly isn't on waranty. :-)

Ya it sounds like it is on its way out. I have the same problem for a year with my beige 17'. Apple will not admit the problem or fix it so you are out of luck.
