Please help!
I got a 256mb ram chip for my iMac DV 400MHZ from Mac Solutions. It was only $75 so I was really happy. When I install the ram my computer starts behaving very strange (the monitor turns all blue or all green. Once it was all red!!) Sometimes the computer starts up by the monitor never turns on at all! The other thing that's happening is it wont start at all.
I have put the ram into both slots to see if that helps and I doesn't. I have zapped the Pram to no avail.
Now here's the kicker!
I have returned the ram twice. The chip I have now is the 3rd one they have sold me and I have had the same problems everytime. The first chip was a PC133 the other two have been PC100.
I was thinking that it must be my mac thats faulty but when I put back in the ram I orginally had (two 64mb chips) all is well.
I am completely stumped........any help would be greatly appreciated.

Im not sure if the firmware is updated. I have recently installed OSX. Would that have done it?

To see if you have the latest firmware in your iMac go to "Apple System Profiler" > "System Profile" > "Production Information" look for "Boot ROM version". I believe the latest firmware for the iMac DV is 4.17

Very strange. It seems highly unlikely that three different chips with different specs would be incompatible with the firmware update. It also seems highly unlikely that three different chips would be inherently defective.
You've probably already considered this, but make sure that you seat the new RAM completely when you install it (it's conceivable that your original RAM seats more easily than the new RAM). A long shot, but worth double-checking. Good luck.

I'm pretty sure I'm installing it right but I will check it though.
I looked at the Firmware I have and it's neither of the ones listed that are supposed to be problematic.
It says my boot rom is 1.2f2. I don't know what that means. Any thoughts????????????

The firmware version 1.2f2 is not the latest. I don't know if it will solve your RAM issue but if you are using OS X it may be wise to update. If you decide to update the firmware be sure to follow the "read me" instructions carefully. You can get the update here. http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n12081

If I do update the firmware will it help do you thik? Could it make matters worse? I am running OSX and 9.1 on a single partition, was I supposed to update the firmware when I loaded OSX?
