I have the Logitech Internet Chat Headset and it works fine on PC laptops. However the microphone does not work on Powerbooks. I have tried everything in audio preferences but to no avail. The audio input of the two Powerbooks I tried works perfectly (has been tested independently). Any idea on what is wrong here?

Macs require line level not mic level inputs. Most PC headsets are mic level. You can use the Griffin imic as an adapter with the headset you menitoned, or you can buy a USB or bluetooth headset. FWIW I use the Plantronics DSP-400 USB headset and it works great.

Thanks for the explanation. So, it seems I need to buy something more to resolve this problem.
