Hi everyone. I recently bought a Seagate hard drive and an external enclosure for it. I never formatted a hard drive before so I asked a friend to do it for me, which he did. But only on my PC.

When I plugged it into my Mac, the Mac recognized the disc, but I can't move any files to the new drive. I am guessing that's because it also has to be formatted for Mac. Is that correct? And if so, how do I do it?

I tried to move a file and the response was: "The item could not be moved because 'hard drive' can not be modified."

Please help. Thanks for any suggestions.

Open up Disk Utility and delete the partition(s) on the external and create a new one.

Sorry in advance if this sounds underinformed:

It wasn't partitioned into separate drives. It was done as one drive. But there are 2 entries in disk utility. One says 465.8GB cremax tech co and the other says IcyDock, which was the temp nickname I gave the drive. Which do I click erase for and then what do I do?

Thanks,
Jason

Yes. It is formatted for a pc (NTFS) and needs to be formatted for your Mac (HFS+).
Delete both of the ones you have, and then format it.
