I'd like to add a webcam to my setup so I can ichat to my friend abroad. Can anyone recommend one?

Is Firewire better than USB?

He also uses skype. Do webcams have to be skype compatible or will they all work?

Thanks in advance!

No, but I can recommend using the forum's search feature, like the forum guidelines tell you too (but you probably haven't read those anyway), because this question gets asked every week.

Thanks for your rather curt response. I imagine it is very irritating to see the same stuff come up again and again.

There are only 2 pages to this particular forum and none reference a camera. Why does it only show 2 pages?

I'll use the search feature. Will this find stuff on the rather invisible pages 3 to 999999?

http://forums.macnn.com/57/consumer-...-powerbook-g4/ is on those 2 pages that show, and it links to the much more comprehensive http://forums.macnn.com/57/consumer-...cams-will-you/

USB is better than FW for Mac webcams, since it's cheaper and doesn't have bizzaro issues like the iPod+iSight+Mac=freeze bug.

Thanks for your attention. I had to idea about the firewire bug.

I've spent 3 days researching this topic which is why I posted in the first place. It appears to me that it's not an easy subject. There once was isight, but now it's gone. Well, UK at least. I usually use 123macmini to advise me on future purchases, but for webcams there was nothing. Perhaps that is what this forum needs, a breakdown per item - similar to your top 5 apps for a mac.

I asked for some recommendations because there is no one I can ask personally. I could spend a month looking for the right cam, or I could just ask another mac user what he uses. That's why we're a community. You tell me to avoid firewire - I take you at your word and avoid it. Job done. Your advice was worth something to me.

I think I fancy the Philips SPC900NC...

Hey, I've bought the philips 900NC webcam.

I've installed drivers (macam & other) from the internet. I should be seeing 90 fps but I see only 5fps and my image is a little pixelated

The sound has a weird echo/delay also. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

I have a 1.5GHz PPC mini with 1GB ram.
