I bought a Western Digital MyBook 500 GB Hard Drive recently. I have it connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station and it works very well. The problem I have is when hooking it up directly to my computer. I tried doing this on both firewire 400 and firewire 800 since I have a lot of data to transfer. It won't even show up on my screen. I know the computer is seeing it's there because when I remove the drive it says how I remove a device improperly. Even Disk Utility shows it but I can't find it in finder and elsewhere. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

What format is it? Are you connecting it to the AE with USB, or firewire? Have you tried connecting it by USB to your computer?

After updating to 10.4.10, my external firewire drive borks all the time, causing all applications that are trying to access it (Finder, iTunes, etc) to freeze until I unplug it. It is super annoying and has made it nearly impossible to use the hard drive.

If I had USB on it, I'd plug in via that, but it is firewire only. Not sure if this is related to above, but any ideas?

How did it come to this? Goodbye PowerPC. | sensory output

I had problems with one of my WD My Book Pro 500GB drives. Am sending it back. I'm not sure whether I want a replacement or a refund. I've not been entirely happy with those disks (I have two), but when they *are* working well they're lovely.
