I am contemplating getting a Blackberry phone and while I expect to pay the usual costs for voice connectivity, I'm wondering if I can forsake the expensive "data" plan and simply connect to my home WLAN to surf the web and do e-mail at no cost. The latter is probably too good to be true, isn't it?

None of the current BlackBerry cellular phones have wifi (the 7270 has wifi, but supports voip calls instead of cellular carrs), but the upcoming 8820 will. I think it's scheduled for a Q3 release.

I'm not sure which provider you're looking at, but T-mobile's data plan is only $20/mo.

Could be. I can't upgrade my 8700 for about a year, so I haven't been following the crackberry news too closely.
