I'm thinking of hooking up a Newer Technology MiniStack V2 750Gb to my AirPort Extreme base station via USB 2 (I want this drive, so it would fit perfectly under my base station). I would use it to store my whole iTunes library and my photos library. That way, I could access iTunes content and photos with my PowerMac, my PowerBook and my Apple TV.
Has anyone done this? Could you stream the content (video, music and photos) to Apple TV from the USB drive? I have the 40GB Apple TV, my music library alone is high bitrate and reaching 42Gb and I haven't even ripped all my CDs yet...

I want a 750Gb drive so I would also eventually use it for Leopard's Time machine.

Thanks

Anybody out there using a USB drive hooked to an AirPort Extreme Base Station to stream iTunes content to an Apple TV?

Thanks

If I understand you correctly, you want to store your iTunes content on a USB drive?

I don't see any problems with this; as long as iTunes can see the content, it should be able to stream it to the AppleTV. As long as you realize that you will still need to be running iTunes and the host computer while streaming your content and that the AppleTV won't be able to see and access content from the USB drive on it's own.

Exactly!
I would like the iTunes content on the USB drive to be accessible from my laptop or my tower. I'm just wondering if AppleTV could be driven by either computer (not simultaneously of course).

You can stream to the AppleTV from any computer. It will only synchronize (copy content to the aTV's hard disk) from one computer. I don't think it cares where iTunes gets it's content from. As long as iTunes can see the content, you should be able to get it to the aTV

Yes, it will work. This is how I currently have mine setup.
