Possible to retrieve content from an Apple TV?

We were burglarized and lost all our computers - except the Apple TV. It is now our only backup of many many many gigs of content, much of which is irreplaceable (we had copious backups, but all the externals were stolen too!). Is there any way to get that content back into an iTunes library on a brand new Mac?

Rip the hard drive out and plug it in to your new Mac using an external enclosure.

I would be glad to do that -- but when I replaced the HD a few weeks ago, I noticed that the media was not stored in any format that I could recognize. Did I miss something?
