I am working on an intel dual core xeon server running 10.4.9 for a friend. He had someone go out and purchase a SCSI card along with a DLT VS160 tape drive to make daily backups of his work. The original 'techie' is no longer able to help so I am trying to clean up the mess.

The server has a copy of Retrospect 6.1 installed and everything seems to be connected and working fine. After placing a tape in the drive, it reads for a while and it then 'Ready' with a green light. No new volumes show up in the Finder, Disk Utility, /Volumes folder, or (as far as I can tell) the System Profiler. Retrospect cannot find the drive either. This is the first time I have tried using a tape drive with OS X so I am not sure what to look for. After reading some of the forums here, it looks like Apple isn't too keen on tape drive backups but Retrospect does have that capability built-in. Also, on the companies website they state that the drive itself is compatible with Retrospect, which leads me to believe the scsi card isn't working right. Any ideas would be much appreciated.... thanks!

Tapes? Sorry I'm just a little confused - wouldn't an external HD be a safer option?

Yes it probably would be. He has purchased this already and I would at least like to get it working. They are 160 gig tapes, so it only takes a couple for him to backup everything. Also, I think he likes the idea of taking the backups home with him.

Just wondering. It does sound like a SCSI problem. Obviously, check connections and terminations. If you have another SCSI device, plug it in and see if that works. SCSI has always been a tiny bit flaky under OS X.

Could also be a Retrospect driver specific to that scsi card or the tape drive. The tape drive wouldn't necessarily show up in the System Profiler, but the scsi card should.
