I have a 17" Apple CRT monitor that came with my blue + white G3 some years ago.

When I connect it to the computer and plug it in, there is a constant audible clicking and the power button pulses faintly. The tube never lights up. When powered up but disconnected from the video card, the clicking stops.

What's broken, and should I just dispose of the monitor? (yes, I know how to dispose of such items properly)

A monitor that old, it's most likely cheaper to dump it and buy a new one than to repair it.

thanks, but I'd like to know if someone knows what part went out. I might be able to donate it or give it away on Craig's List if I can tell the donee what went out on it.

From your brief description (clicking), it sounds like the power supply circuit has failed. Personally, I would just dispose of it. I recently sold my old 17" Mitsubishi CRT in A1 condition on ebay for £5 - so who out there would bother with a broken one?
