I've pulled out an old Western Digital 3.5" harddrive from a Performa 6400 running OS 8.6.

I've connected the harddrive to a USB adapter in order to read the drive from my iMac, but after the drive spins up, it doesn't show up on my desktop or in Disk Utility.

Any advice? Do I need to start messing with jumpers on the drive?

Just did some jumper configuration from this page:

But having tried Neutral. Cable Select, Master and Slave to no avail, this is probably not the issue.

When it spins up, does it remain spinning, or does it spin down quickly?

Another possible thought - is the drive getting enough power? Is the adapter AC powered?

Cold Warrior: It stays spinning.
osiris: The USB adapter has got AC power.

I'm thinking of connecting it directly to an IDE controller on a PC and then running MacDrive.

Isn't the file system used in OS 8.6 the same as in OS X (HFS+)?

I put it on an IDE controller in a PC and read the disk with Mac Drive 7 (trial), so problem solved.
