Is this a possibility anytime this year yet? It would be really cool if I could buy only one monitor to display everything. More than 1 HDMI input would be even better.

as far as the why part, this is why. I want to plug in a cable box and watch tv, my PS3 to play games, and my mac. Why is this not possible, especially with a 30 inch HD display?

Because the 30-inch display doesn't support HDMI.

The non-smart ass answer is that video cards are only slowly starting to support HDMI as an option so there hasn't been a demand for that type of input on Apple displays. It's probably something that might eventually make its way to the displays, but right now that type of convergence is a niche market and not an overwhelming consumer demand.

There are DVI-to-HDMI cables out there if you want to buy a different display to use with your Mac.

Are there any computer monitors that DO support HDMI, or am I stuck plugging my mac into a TV?

Here are 18 LCD monitors with HDMI.
Here are the 8 that have HD (1080p) resolution or better.

These are so much cheaper than the apple displays.

How do they compare in quality?

The reviews for the displays are all pretty good, which surprises me.
