I have the original Soundsticks that I bought pretty much when they first came out (what was that, 6, 7 years ago?). Lately (pretty much started this week) they've started randomly just cutting out pretty often. It happened maybe 8 or 9 times yesterday, and already happened once today. This has happened before but not for several years. When it does happen the only way to fix them is to disconnect them from my computer, re-connect them, then go into the Sound preference pane and change my output device to something else and then back to the Soundsticks. It's a bit of a pain in the ass.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this to happen again all of a sudden and so frequently? I'm afraid they might just be dying which would suck because they've been working great for so long and I have no real desire to buy new ones right now.

Check the power connector on the subwoofer unit. Mine tends to be a less-than stable connection and can get knocked out very easily. It will produce all the symptoms you have.

The power connection seems tight. And when the speakers stop working the little blue light is still on, and all it takes to fix it is unplugging the USB connection and reconnecting it. :/

Well to me Soundsticks dying is a good thing, worst sounding speakers i've ever heard in their price range. Do yourselfa favor and go to Cambridge Soundworks and get you a set of SoundWorks/SoundWorks speakers, your ears will thank you. Best sounding speakers you can get, you'll be amazed as to how much you were missing in music using those muddy, cloudy, no bass detail soundsticks. The sub is to die for speakers in their price range ($79).

Anyway sounds as you just having USB connection issues, are sticks in a hub? if so give them a port/bus all to themselves and see if disconnect prob goes away. If you've added any new usb devices to your set up lately it could be it going down, taking everything in that usb buss down with it, just do soundsticks on 1 usb buss and keyboard mouse in other, if all goes ok, slowly add other devices back in 1 by 1 till you find the culprit.

I can't remember if sticks had a integrated cable (made into Sub) or common usb cable connection, if the later it might be a bad cable, try replacing it. Could also be a bad cable on other devices as well, from what i've dealt with in past when one thing in your USB chain acts up, everthing suffers.

If you really do love them, and your fed up of it cutting out, why not just buy a new set, because 7 years for some computer speakers is quite a long time, and they apparantly have served you well.

I actually never found the sound quality too bad. Not great, but good enough. And I'd rather not have to spend any money to replace them just now. I know exactly what I'm missing in my music, but when I decide that it's worth it to pay the money so that I can hear it I intend to do a little better than Cambridge Soundworks. I'm just hoping that I don't have to do until I want to, rather than being forced to.

They're connected directly to my computer. A long time ago I had them connected to a hub and they drew too much power for it and kept throwing it's built-in breaker. It was very annoying. Since then I've only ever connected them directly to my computer.

The cable is integrated, unfortunately. Although since I've posted this thread, it only happened one or two times and has since been behaving. So who knows. :/
