Hello peeps,
im looking to scan in all my old family photos. I need a scanner that is in the 200-300 dollar range, does a really good job with photos, can handle multiple images at once, and it doesn't need to have any slide-scanning abilities nor any negatives-scanning or anything like that, just plain old photos. Any suggeestions? I dont know anything about scanners.

thanks,
jimi

You need a scanner with at least 300 dpi OPTICAL capability that includes Mac software like Photoshop Elements and/or a twain that is compatible with GraphicConverter. All the rest is gravy. Epson, Canon, and HP sell many in that price range or quite a bit less. Software is far more important than the hardware. sam

Most photos are printed with a resolution of 200-300 dpi (typically 300 dpi), so anything above 300 dpi is pointless. If your pictures are old, really old, even then resolutions above 300 dpi aren't going to be very useful. For a typical 4x6 inch^2 picture, that'd be about 2 megapixels per photo.

Basically any reasonable scanner will work. I use an `old' Epson 1660 Photo (i. e. it can scan negatives and slides) which is about as good and as fast as the new Epson scanner we have at work.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

For best results, do one picture at a time. For so-so results, you can scan multiple pictures as long as they fit on the glass on any of them. I do not know of any scanner with the software to "auto-recognize" any picture. sam

My Canon LiDE 60 (and many other Canons) will do multi-scan. Depending on size of photo, I can do up to 6 photos at a time. Scanner runs about $100.
