I currently have a QuickSilver G4 933Mhz and Harmon Kardon Soundsticks (original usb version).
I'm planning to upgrade my Mac quite soon to either a new iMac or a MacPro.
I want to get a sound system to use now (stereo is fine for now), that I can later use with either the iMac or MacPro that will enable me to get 5.1 audio from DVDs, or DivX files with AC-3, using VLC player. Also to use for playing CDs/MP3s from iTunes (I realise it won't be 5.1 for that). I've read loads of posts about 5.1 audio in the forums, and it seems these are the main choices:
1. Griffin FireWave (or similar), and a 5.1 computer speaker system with individual analogue inputs.
2. An a/v receiver with Optical-IN, and connect to the iMac/MacPro via optical cable.
I don't have a fixed budget but don't want to spend a huge amount of money. I don't play games so don't care about 5.1 audio for that, just for movies. I'm tending towards the av receiver option *if it actually works well*.
Which would you go for?
Can anyone give their experiences of using Optical-OUT to an av receiver?
Any recommendations for AV receivers/Home Theatre packages that would work?
Thanks in advance...
Ben
