I'm not sure when this started, but my first generation Macbook no longer recognizes usb and firewire drives that are MS-DOS formatted.

For instance, usb thumb drive that I've used without problems for the past year no longer works with my computer. When I insert it I get the following error:

code:
Disk Insertion
The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.

The issue is not with the thumb drive. It works in other macs running the same operating system (10.4.10) without issue.

The only solution I've found is to reformat the drive as "Mac OS Extended". This doesn't really solve the problem though, because I often have to use other peoples' thumb drives when they want to give me files.

Anyone experience anything like this and able to offer some help (aside from completely reinstalling Mac OS X)?

Thanks.
