my brother has a new mac setup; he also has 3 lacie external (firewire) drives, and has set them up in an equipment rack, sitting on top of a powerstrip (where everything is plugged in).
i thought it might be bad for the drives to be so close to the ac strip, but.. true? not true?
any thoughts? maybe i'm just thinking back to the floppy-and-magnet days...

No, floppies go on the refrigerator with magnets.  A metallic case around any electrical device (assuming it's been properly assembled) should be a shield from electromagnetic effects, so placing your hard drives (themselves being shielded by their cases) on such a device should be no problem at all.
From a functional perspective though, I hope that these drives-and the computer you're using them with-are plugged into an UPS, not just a power strip/surge suppressor. Surge suppressors are only an impediment to surges, not a real block. UPSs on the other hand, are very good at stopping surges from getting to your equipment.
