Are you asking: are external HDs more/less reliable than internal HDs?

If you take an external HD out of it's case, it's just like an internal HD. The fact that there's a chipset in the case gives it a slightly higher risk of trouble. More important is the brand and usage of the HD. Just keep in mind that all hard drives fail eventually, so a backup plan is important.
