Hello,
My optical drive is a NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A, which is a CD/DVD burner. It plays both media just fine.
However, it won't recognize blank discs. My System Profiler lists it's burning as "not supported".
Do I need firmware, or what?
My system: eMac 700mhz G4, Panther 10.3.9 256 MB ram. I bought this mac second hand, the orig owner said the NEC superdrive was an aftermarket upgrade (of course he didn't mention it didn't burn discs when he demo'ed the dvd player...)
Thank you for your help.

@ TFH: glad it worked !!

@pwrmacg4:
There were issues with a SuperDrive Firmware update some time ago… this one:

Apple SuperDrive Firmware 2.1 - MacUpdate

maybe did your System Software run the update itself ??.

I can not help there, you better look for info in the MacBook board http://forums.macnn.com/macbook-and-ibook/ and if you don't find anything start a new threat about that issue.

That means it can read DVD-R's. If you put in a blank DVD, it can't burn to it, hence it spits it out.
