Was planning on purchasing the 1TB model, but notice that the speed on it was 5400rpm, and the 500gb one is 7200rpm?

Anyone know why? I really want the 1TB and use it as a backup drive, but decided to wait when i saw the difference on drive speeds between the two models.

Because that's the only speed WD has! Seagate and Hitachi both have 7200RPM 1TB drives (and no 5400RPM drives) with twice as much cache.

Buy the Hitachi ($330) or Seagate ($335) and put it in a decent enclosure.

Can Tiger/Leopard boot off a WD My Book Studio Edition's FW400/800/eSATA? I'm planning to buy one due to it being cheaper than separate storage and enclosure.

You should be able to boot off a MyBook on FW/eSATA (assuming your eSATA card is bootable) for all Macs and also USB for Intel Macs.
