Error message: "An error occurred while trying to add the selected printer. Error:-50."
When trying to re-install my printer (HP LaserJet 1320) to my computer (Mac OS X, version Tiger 10.4.10)
I receive the above error message, which prevents the re-installation of the printer. The printer is directly connected to the computer via usb and there is no network involved.
Here is the scenario:
From the Printer browser window I select the printer type (HP LaserJet 1320) from the Print Using drop-down menu, after which the above error message appears and ends the printer installation process.
Does anyone have any information on the Error 50 error message and how to overcome it?
Thanks for any tips.

Download and install the latest driver for the printer, restart and see what you get. If you've already done that, I don't know.

Yes, thanks. I'm using the latest printer driver.
I'm hoping someone with previous experience with the
Error 50 message will comment.

I've noticed this with my HP PSC printers, although it only affected the networked users. Did you remove the printer from the list before installing it? Also, check your console and system logs (Applications/Utilities/Console) to see anything relevant happening when you try adding that printer.

Q: Did you remove the printer from the list before installing it?
A: No, it's always been on the list.
Also, check your console and system logs (Applications/Utilities/Console) to see anything relevant happening when you try adding that printer.
I've had a look and here is some related information below from the logs:
Sun Oct 21 14:00:53 MDT 2007 -----> Proxy: (00CNFC54L0XJ.hp__LaserJet__1320__series.hpusb) IO Proxy Exception: res_err_unknown
I'm still looking into solving the problem but thanks for the support!

Well this error is new to me. I haven't seen that one before. How are you reinstalling the driver? By running the HP Driver installer?
Try this if it helps:
1. Remove the printer from the list
2. Add the printer back in -- you can unplug the printer from the USB port and reconnect it, or go back to Printer Setup Utility and adding the printer back in.
See if the problem still occurs.

Re:Try this if it helps: 1. Remove the printer from the list.
I can't seem to find a way to remove my printer listing (hp laserjet 1320 - usb) from the printer browser window in the 'default browser' section. Even after I reset the printing system, the listing for my printer remains intact.
There is also an 'ip printer' section within the printer browser window.
My understanding is that this is the way to connect the printer to a network,
but I don't believe that my printer is compatible for this type of connection.
My printer is called hp laserjet 1320, but there is also a printer called
hp laserjet 1320n (n=network), and I think only the 1320n can be connected
via the ip printer option. I could be wrong about that, but that's my understanding.
Another thing to note is that recently I deleted the files from the following pathway:
(my name; eg. John Smith) folder (with the house icon) / library / printers
I deleted the contents of this file in an attempt to remove all traces of the old printer files before re-installation.
However, this printer folder remains empty and I'm not sure how printer files get
returned to it. I assumed that any needed files would return to this printer folder after a successful printer installation.
In addition, I have the latest printer driver for my printer in the Applications folder (HPLaserJet_v5_5_2-2.dmg), and I install the printer driver simply by clicking onto the file. I've even tried to remove the driver from the Applications folder, and then put it back in, and then re-install the driver after resetting the printing system, to see if that does anything. But it doesn't seem to help.
Thanks again for any thoughts on these printer file mysteries.
