I see that 10.5 works with smart cards. If I want to use one of these to secure some machines, what can I buy?

OS X 10.4 supports SMC SCR331 without separate drivers, IIRC.
SCM SCR331 SMART card reader

There's an Apple KB/support document on smart cards (or DOD CAC) and OS X.

Neat, I wonder how you get cards. It would be great if there were one that worked with the MBP's ExpressCard slots!

It'd have to have an expanded front, because a normal smartcard is wider than the expresscard slot.

People normally get smartcards from their employer, because you have to have a way to make the card (like a driver's license printer), upload data to its chip, store a PIN, and also sync that with a central database.
