Sorry about the basic question, but I want to be sure to get the right drive.

I have a 933MHz G4 that I want to get a 500GB external hard drive for. I've read CharlesS' comments on the internal Seagates paired with a case, and that seems like a good solution. But, do I need serial or parallel - or does it matter? Also, I hope to update my Mac someday and would like the drive to remain compatible with new models if possible.

Thanks for any help.

I'd get an external case that has firewire/usb 2.0 ports on the outside for hooking it up to your Mac, with SATA hook-up on the INSIDE that will allow you to utilize a modern SATA HD. SATA is the way to go.
