Hi there.

This is my first post. Over the years, I've owned a lot of different Macs and a lot of different mice, keyboards, and USB hubs. Ever since switching to Mac OS X, I have noticed that occasionally my mouse, my keyboard, or both would work after rebooting, and I'd have to unplug the offending device and then plug it back in to get it to start working.

This only happened occasionally, but now that I've installed Mac OS X 10.5.0 and 10.5.1, it's happening every time I restart or start my machine. I've tried plugging the mouse and keyboard into the back of my Mac directly, and I've tried plugging them into a port on my powered USB 2.0 hub. It seems to help to plug directly into the back, but not by much.

Has anyone had similar troubles? I don't remember this happening in Mac OS/9, but that was so long ago now. As I said, this seems to happen regardless of the version of OS X, the Mac computer, and the peripherals. I just can't figure it out.

For what it's worth, my current set-up is a Mac Mini Core Duo 2 (2.0 GHz with 1 Gb of RAM) running Mac OS X 10.5.1. My mouse is a Logitech MX500, and my keyboard is a Kinesis Advantage Pro USB. The hub is a Targus USB 2.0 seven-port hub.

I thought I'd give it a try and see if any of you clever boys can suggest a fix or what the problem might be. Surely I'm not the only one getting frustrated with having to unplug my mouse every time I restart my Mac. Thanks in advance for your time! :)

I wouldn't connect the keyboard to a hub. It should have a direct connection to the computer.

My MacPro does this with its MX Revolution. It always seems to happen when I eject a USB device; for example:

Eject iPod/iPhone
Mouse stops working
Unplug/replug wireless Logitech dongle
Mouse starts working again

A bit annoying. Happens in 10.4 and 10.5 (where I *don't* have LCC installed - I did in 10.4).

Logitech's stuff has really gone downhill this year, both hardware & software wise.....

For those who don't know, LCC uses the APE haxie to add it's functionality, which Apple & others identified early on as a big no-no with 10.5........now LGT says the newest version was re-written without using the APE stuff, but I have yet to see any reports online that says it works any better than the old one did......YMMV

I had a Revo MX earlier this year and it sucked bigtime on my mac running 10.4.10, but worked quite well on my sisters Dell under W-XPpro.....go figure

I took it back & got a wireless Intellimouse Explorer2.....works like a charm regardless of the OS or machine........and was $35 cheaper than the Revo too

And BTW, I have always connected both my mouse & KB directly into my macs USB ports, until I bought a USB-2 PCI card this summer, and now they are both connected to it notta problemo
Signatures are ugly. Bitchy women are ugly......YOU do the math :)
