Hi. I just sold my PowerMac G5, and I am planning on converting my second harddrive (which I did not include in the sale) into an external. Any ideas about what type of enclosure I could/should buy?

What interface are you looking for? FireWire 400, FireWire 800, USB 2.0, eSATA, or some combination of the above?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Well, my drive is serial-ATA and I'd love to turn it into a firewire 400 interface. Thanks.

For FireWire, what you want is an enclosure that uses the Oxford chipset. Usually, if an enclosure uses Oxford, they advertise this fact somewhere on their page (because the quality increase is usually accompanied by a corresponding increase in price).

mduell, do those IcyDock enclosures use Oxford? I see that they turned up in a search for "oxford" on Newegg, but I don't actually see Oxford anywhere in the description. If those are actually using the Oxford chipset, they'd be a pretty good deal, since FireWire enclosures for Serial ATA drives tend to be expensive.

FWIW, the one I have is this one, although it's more expensive than the IcyDock enclosures due to having FireWire 800 on it. This one is a similar enclosure that is a little cheaper, and is popular here on the forums.

This has got to the the 20th thread on this very same subject in the last three months. Someone suggested back then it be made a sticky, can we finally do that or does everyone require personal and individual attention?

Thanks for all the help. I did a couple of searches in the forum for previous threads, but I couldn't find exact answers to my question. Thanks for spending the time.

Yes, a "Post your External Drive" thread would be nice to be stickied.

Also, the comments for the IcyDock enclosure at NewEgg discuss Oxford chipsets and the fact that this enclosure is equipped with it. I read the reviews, it helps to make you an educated consumer.

ALSO, ICY DOCK MB559UEA-1SMB USB and Firewire Enclosure mentions that their Firewire400/USB2 drive enclosure uses the Oxford 924 Chipset.

Nice, good to know. That could be a good solution for people who don't need FW800.

I still like my quad, though.

I bought the IcyDock MB559. It was super easy to set up and works perfectly. Thanks!
