hp printer queue doesn't exit after printing

I am printing to an hp Color LaserJet 2600n from my MacBook. Before I upgraded to 10.5, the printer queue icon would appear in the dock while the print job was being processed, and as soon as the job was complete, it would exit. Now when I print, the print queue remains active in the dock even after the print job is complete.

This is an annoyance because I am printing over the network using wireless and I am not in the same room or even on the same floor as the printer most of the time. Earlier with 10.4.x, I knew my print job had finished because the queue exited. Now I have to open the queue, check it and then manually quit it when the print job is finished. I could leave it open all the time, but sometimes the only reason I haven't put the MacBook to sleep yet is because there is still a job printing. I liked that clear sign that my print job was finished.

Is there anyway to get the queue to automatically exit again?

I don't know why that change was made, but there should be an option in one of the menus to make it quit by default again.

Same here, I even checked the 'Auto Quit'.

I wasn't aware of the Auto Quit until I googled around a bit. (For some reason I didn't find it intuitively obvious to click and hold on the printer queue icon until a menu popped up.) Anyway, it worked for me. The printer queue quits and the icon leaves the dock once the print job is finished.

Apparently, we're not the only ones having this "problem." Interesting approach from Apple, I think. Make new features the default behavior to bring them to people's attention. The users will either grow to like it, or figure out some way of changing it back. From what I read on another site, the thought behind leaving it in the dock is so that you can drag and drop print jobs onto the print queue. Seen from that standpoint, I guess it makes sense. Not the way I work, though, since I rarely print documents I'm not already viewing in some application or another. I usually print from within the application.

Same problem here, even with Auto Quit on.

One of the threads I found indicated that it was important to have the print queue open at the time the Auto Quit was set. Have you tried it with the print queue open?
