I've looked at solving this problem before but not found a satisfying way of doing it.

I need a voice recorder that I can plug into my Mac and drag files onto my desktop. I don't care what kind of files they are (MP3 etc) as long as when I click on the file it just plays.

Previously I looked at a microphone for my iPod, but it didn't look as practical as say a recorder that I can use in the car. I want simple, powerful and elegant.

There is a separate issue of what software will just type them for me ...but that probably belongs in my other thread in the Application forum

Have an iPhone? Sounds like voice notes is coming in the next version, at least according to the rumor sites...
Maybe iPod touch will get it too, though who knows...

I got an Olympus WS 100 for £37 on eBay a couple of months ago and it does exactly what you describe. It only saves audio as WMA files, but Flip4Mac means they can be played directly in QuickTime, so that's not too annoying. It splits in half to reveal the USB port, so you don't need a cable either.
