My MBP is nearly full and I'm looking at getting an external drive to hold my aperture and music libraries.

One temptation that keeps popping up, is the idea of getting Newer Technology Guardian MAXimus RAID-1. For a 500gig external solution is relatively pricey ($399 for 500gig)

Is their an advantage to getting a RAID-1 setup?

I do plan on backing up the data but my options are limited insofar as that both libraries are rather large. I do have another external/portable drive that I use, but for everyday use I'm looking at building an external drive (cage+drives) or buying the Guardian.

All things being equal, is it worth the extra $$$.

Thoughts, opinions, recommendations.

RAID1 is all about availability; if you need high availability, pay up for RAID1. If you don't, I'd just go with a single disk for your library.
Mac update estimates: MacBook Pro 1Q10 (quad core Nehalem [Clarksfield]); MacBook 1Q10 (Arrandale); MacBook Air 1Q10 (Arrandale LV); Mac Pro/Xserve 1Q10 (6 core Westmere, 64+GB RAM); iMac 3Q10 (quad core everywhere); Mac mini 2010

While my aperture and to a lessor extent my music libraries are crucial, I don't think the price increase is worth it. today's drives are pretty reliable and as long as I have a separate backup that should decrease my risk.

I've been going back and forth on this, but I think 400 bucks for a RAID-1 setup may be over kill for my situation.
